Submissions

As one of the preeminent criminal law journals in the nation, recently ranked the #5 journal in the country for scholarship on criminal law and procedure, The Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law (“BJCL”) publishes work covering a broad range of topics in both substantive and procedural criminal law.

Please see below for our general submission requirements for articles and notes.

Articles Submission Requirements:

§ Submissions must be related to some aspect of criminal law.

§ Submissions must be novel and original work.

§ Articles must be submitted via Scholastica for consideration at https://scholasticahq.com.

§ Articles must comply with Bluebook citation format for law journal articles.

Notes Submission Requirements:

Anyone interested in submitting a note should contact our Submissions Team by emailing bjclsubmissions@berkeley.edu. Please comply with the following procedures:

  1. Attach a PDF file of your note, including title and abstract. Please ensure that your document is double-spaced and uses twelve-point font.

  2. In the body of your email, but not in the note itself, please include your name, law school, graduation year, and preferred contact information.

Eligibility
We welcome notes from authors who are currently enrolled in any accredited law school or who graduated from law school within the last year.

Timeline
To be considered for publication in our spring edition, please submit your note no later than October 15th. We aim to notify authors whether their notes have been accepted or rejected within a few weeks of our submission deadline. We plan on publishing notes in Spring 2027.

Anonymity Procedures
We strive to keep our note selection process entirely anonymous. In service of this, please remove your name and any other identifying information, including acknowledgments, from your file before submitting. Additionally, do not communicate directly with any member of the Notes Team about the status of your submission.
