Founded in 2000, the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law is the premier criminal law review in the western United States. With over 10,000 readers per year, BJCL is a flagship publication in both the academic and practicing communities. The journal is edited by students at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (formerly Boalt Hall) and operates under the advisement of Berkeley Law faculty.
BJCL provides a vital forum for the discussion of regional, national, and international criminal law issues. The journal regularly publishes cutting-edge scholarship by professors, judges, research fellows, clerks, and law students from throughout the country. While articles selected for publication have been produced by authors representing a wide variety of institutions, the most well-represented include Harvard Law School, New York University School of Law, and Berkeley Law.
In addition to its Caleb Foote Symposium issue and California Annual Review, BJCL publishes two general issues each year, in February and August. Due to the quality and volume of submissions, publication slots are typically filled at least six months in advance of publication. Authors who seek to publish work in the journal should visit our submissions page.
